High up in the Hollywood hills is the Griffith Observatory, and there is no place like it at sunset. A thick fog hangs over the city of Los Angeles at twilight and it’s magic. For a JAmes Dean fan and film fan in general this is like a holy grail. A large portion of Rebel Without A Cause in which Dean tangles with the school’s thugs was shot here as was the climactic final sequence (there is a bust of Dean overlooking the sprawl below). Also, the tunnel at the base of the hill was used in Back to the Future 2 where Doc Brown hoists Marty to safety before Biff Tannen slams into a manure truck, and it serves as the entrance to Toon Town in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Film nerd Graceland and an incredible place to visit. Click on an image to see a larger version. All shot on Mamiya 645.
