FEEDING TIME AT THE ZOO

A few weeks back I hit the Electric Zoo festival to snap some pics. It was a bit of a lost cause for portraits as everyone looked weirdly pedestrian in their attempted ‘nuttiness’. I dunno, it just didn’t seem wholly original this time, kind of like how Coachella has become more of a fashion trend gathering, Electric Zoo was like a festival for hashtags and social media companies to exploit the punters. No one wanted to know your name, just “What’s your instagram handle?”, people yanked you when they saw your camera and yelled “take my picture! take my picture!”, ravers carried signs above their heads with their own hashtags or snapchat links, the festival itself was cashless as you paid for everything by loading money to a scan-able wrist band (where you no surrender CC details, personal info, etc to load up), and wanna be app start ups assaulted you to ensure you downloaded whatever it was. It felt like a big sad, tired party. I’ve shot the Electric Daisy Carnival and that’s a celebration, amazing costumes and vibrant revelers. This just felt off. Ah well…Boyle_EZoo_007
